A Lens

“A sibling is the lens through which you see your childhood.” (Ann Hood)

Dearest Kim,

I don't think I could ever say it enough, but I love you more than you can imagine. I don't know how I got so lucky to have you as a sister, but I wouldn't trade you for the world. You're a strong, beautiful, smart, and an amazing person who is capable of doing great things for the world. You're one of the kindest, most generous people I know. I am proud of the person you have become. Thank you for being an inspiration in my life, and all you've done for me. There isn't one person I'd pick to be my sister over you because you are perfect for me.

Thank you for always listening to me when no one else wanted to. Thank you for understanding things that no one else could. Thank you for letting me vent when I was upset. Thank you for letting me assume I was right even when you knew I wasn't. Thank you for showing me new perspectives on things I could only see one way. Thank you for being there for me. Thank you for always encouraging me to do my best and seeing the best in me that I couldn't always see. Thank you for your constant positivity and making me laugh.

Some people aren't as lucky as we are to have each other like we do. I am here with you until my last breath, and ten I will try to visit you in your dreams to let you know I am okay in Heaven with all our loved ones. You can count on me.

What kind of letter would it be without some brotherly advice? Always be yourself. You are an original, and I love you just as you are. Remember to always attempt great things. Know that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. I believe in you. You can make a difference in the world because you’ve always been my difference maker. I know we have our differences, but we always get over it in the end. Thank you for being not only my sister, but my best friend.

Love,

Robert

P.S. Do you remember Mom’s favorite Bible verse? Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”

“You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you as you are to them.” (Desmond Tutu)[i]
