Survival

“Living through a home renovation is like living in the wild... you do whatever it takes to survive. “ (Chicago Stone Source & Remodeling)

Whether it’s building a new home or improving an existing one, surprises almost always occur in the final completion date and costs. Isn’t life interesting? It this element of not knowing what to expect that makes the thirteen episodes of one season of tubi’s home improvement show, Love It or Lose It, so fascinating.

Would you give up your house keys for a chance to win a free, professional home makeover? Love It or Lose It is a design show with attitude. In each episode, the homeowners have a room that needs desperately needs renovated. Virtually, they are introduced to three radical designers (each specializing in a particular style).

The homeowners are gone for the weekend, without knowing which of three extreme designers have been chosen to create a luxurious interior that is guaranteed to amaze. They don’t know which designer is chosen to makeover their room. They have to leave the work to the designer with no input from them throughout the process. After the reveal of the room, the homeowners have one crucial decision to make about the room. They can “love it” (and keep the new room), or “lose it,” (and force the designer to tear down their masterpiece), and leave a blank canvas for the homeowners to start over with.

Condoleezza Rice said: “Life is full of surprises and serendipity. Being open to unexpected turns in the road is an important part of success. If you try to plan every step, you may miss those wonderful twists and turns. Just find your next adventure. Do it well, enjoy it, and then not now, think about what comes next.” I believe life is a lot like an episode of Love It or Lose It.  Just like the nervous homeowners at the conclusion of the show, no one really knows how their life is going to turn out even fifteen minutes from now.

You have got to be flexible because the heavenly Father is not asking your permission to change in your life what He needs to (though that would be nice). Metaphorically, it’s time to snap shut the harness inside God’s divine roller coaster.  Who knows where this adventure of a lifetime will go, and conclude? Be assured that you are not alone. Look at the seat next to you. Your heavenly Father is in it as He tightly continues to hold your hand. [i]
