Speak

“Let your tongue speak what your heart thinks.” (Davy Crockett)

We’ve all had those moments where our angry, hurtful words have deeply hurt someone we cared about. Have you ever had a time when it was all you could to hold your tongue from uttering your true feelings on a subject? Does the Bible have any advice on the topic of our mouths? I am so glad you asked. Let me tell you all about it.

1. When you’re clueless as to what should be said.

"Even a fool who keeps quiet is considered wise, for when he keeps his mouth shut, he appears clever." (Proverbs 17:28)

2. When you're mistreated.

“When He was verbally abused, He didn’t return the abuse; when He suffered, He didn’t make threats to cause suffering in return; instead, He trusted that all would be put right by the One who is just when He judges. (1 Peter 2:23)

3. When you're angry.

"Like a conquered city with no walls, so is a man who has no self-control." (Proverbs 25:28)

 4. When you don’t understand your life purpose..

“It is good. The Eternal One is good to those who expect Him, to those who seek Him wholeheartedly.  It is good to wait quietly for the Eternal to make things right again. It is good to have to deal with restraint and burdens when young.  Just leave in peace the one who waits in silence, patiently bearing the burden of God;” (Lamentations 3:25-28)

5. When your ashamed of your words.

“Whatever a person says in the dark will be published in the light of day, and whatever a person whispers in private rooms will be broadcast from the housetops.” (Luke 12:3)

6. When you spoke without thinking first.

Do not send your neighbor away, saying, “Get back with me tomorrow.
I can give it to you then” when what he needs is already in your hand.”
(Proverbs 3:28)

7. When you want to bring back the good old days.

Do not ask, “Where have all the good times gone?” Wisdom knows better than to ask such a thing. (Ecclesiastes 7:10)

 8. When your unhappy about all you have to do.

“Do all things without complaining or bickering with each other. “ (Philippians 2:14)

9. When the timing is wrong.

“A well-spoken word at just the right moment is like golden apples in settings of silver.” (Proverbs 25:11)

10. When you don't have anything good to say.

“Don’t let even one rotten word seep out of your mouths. Instead, offer only fresh words that build others up when they need it most. That way your good words will communicate grace to those who hear them.”  (Ephesians 4:29)

“You can change your world by changing your words... Remember, death and life [is] in the power of the tongue.” (Joel Osteen)[i]
