The High Cost of Freedom

Dear Unknown Soldier,
Recently, my wife’s work was putting together care packages for the troops overseas. That made me think that I don’t believe I have ever written you. This is my first time. I personally want to thank you for all the freedoms I enjoy because of you. My ability:  to worship God as I want to; to work in the job that best fits me; and write my own blog that I can express the opinions I wish to.
It hasn’t been lost on me that my freedom has caused great physical harm (or even death). Because you value personal independence so much, there children with parents that have been absent (for a long time) and spouses, siblings, and grandparents that have no idea when a long awaited reunion will finally happen. By the way, we have a connection.
I had a military father. He was in the military before I was born on August 18, 1963. Unfortunately, he was killed in a car accident on June 24, 1978 (when I was thirteen). I am enclosing a picture of him, Corporal Robert Eugene Kinker, in combat at Korea (around August of 1953). He was in the 4th Marine Corps Reserve and Recruitment District. Please don’t ever lose sight of how much you are valued for the sacrifices you (and your families) are daily making. I will remember you in my prayers when I say them.
Sincerely,

Robert A. Kinker
