Have
you ever had a weekend (or weekday) where your schedule was open (and empty)?
You started yawning in the afternoon, and decided to sleep in your bed for a
luxurious, delicious hour long nap (or several hours if you like) under your
warm comforter, your back on a firm mattress, with your head resting on two
fluffy pillows (maybe with a favorite pet). Hopefully, you felt wonderful when
you awoke from slumber.
I
truly believe God has set an alarm clock in our bodies that tells us exactly
when we are tired. Unlike children, adults don’t fight sleep if they can fully
indulge in it. I believe are internal alarm clock is ringing (crying) loudly
when we are tired at work, or are behind the wheel of a car for example. To me
it’s important to rest regularly for the right number of hours when a busy
schedule allows. At work, things like coffee, energy drinks, a brisk walk, or
cold water on the face may help with the dreaded afternoon slump (sleep time).
If
you are always tired (extra sleep doesn’t help) and your nighttime snoring is
waking you up, it might be time to have to have a sleep study done to see if
you have sleep apnea. This is a serious condition where a person stops
breathing multiple times (arousals) during a night’s sleep. A sleep doctor may
recommend medication, weight loss, a CPAP machine (keeps air passages open), or
all three. Don’t delay this because it can affect the heart. When your body
craves rest, don’t ignore it. God put that desire there. Sleep is a very good thing.
