“Cryptomnesia [means] you forget that you’ve forgotten something, and perceive it as a new, original thought.”
My wife tells me that the older I get the
more I look like my mother. I can see it at times when I look into our bathroom
mirror. I wonder, “Is this a good thing?” As both my mother and I continue to
age, there’s another we both have in common (according to Bobbi). My mom and I
both tend to forget that we tell the same stories over and over again without
remembering we told them before. I really believe my mother does it more than I
do. Sometimes I am able to stop myself before I tell that story again.
This blog is also another example of
cryptomnesia. Who knows the number of times that I discussed a topic on my blog
thinking it was original. Chances are
something similar was discussed months or years prior if someone chose to
research that (with all their free time). Of course, there are times I know I
have discussed a topic in the distant past of the blog. My wish is that you
won’t remember that, and you’ll believe this is a fresh, new post. (Maybe I’m
putting too much thought into this, and you really don’t care. You just want
something interesting to read. I’m OK with this too.)
There are some things in life that your
heavenly Father doesn’t care if you forget, and repeat over and over as
original thought. Psalm 118:1 (HCSB) is one of them: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His faithful love endures forever. Can you do this for the rest of your life? Just be observant
for the divine.[i]
