Inspire

“First find the man in yourself if you will inspire manliness in others.” (Thomas Alcott)

Dear Eric,

On the brink of becoming a senior citizen, I wonder if I’ve done manhood correct in my past and will in the future. At the age of fourteen, my father died in a car accident. Though my mother tried to bring men consistently into my life for the purpose of role modeling, nothing stuck. Without a father to guide me, there has at times been the lingering question of “am I doing this right?”

To be honest, I‘ve guessed about manhood in some of my crucial life roles like marriage, fatherhood, and surviving cancer and our eight miscarriages. Only time will tell if I got them right. There’s so much of my father in me, which is a mixed bag of blessings at times.

The best thing that I’ve experienced so far is God’s faithfulness. I can see Him there in every point in my life providing support when it was needed. The wonderful thing about my heavenly Father is when I had questions about manhood He was there to either give me the answer Himself, or provide other men who could.

If I could go back in time to change some of my challenging events, part of me would want to. I must admit though that without those crucial challenges I wouldn’t be who I am today. In every major event in my life there has been good if I was only willing to look hard enough for it. My life has not turned out the way I envisioned, but I’m sure this is exactly where God wants me.

Some of the most important pieces of advice I can give you are to find your passion whatever it is. It makes life worth living (really). Be the kind of father and husband you will be proud to look back on. I believe that’s about all I have to give you. Hopefully, something in my ramblings will help you.

In Christ,

Robert K.

John3:16

"It was men who stopped slavery. It was men who ran up the stairs in the Twin Towers to rescue people. It was men who gave up their seats on the lifeboats of the Titanic. Men are made to take risks and live passionately on behalf of others.” (John Eldredge)

“Manhood is taking care of your family and being able to bless other people. Not yourself - but whether you can bless other people.” (Magic Johnson)
