Learning to remain content throughout the day can have dramatic positive effects on your overall mental functioning. A contented person knows that the source of contentment is deep within, trusting oneself, and loving the life one has. You must become content with what you have. This doesn’t mean you never seek improvements within yourself or for your quality of life. You have everything to be thankful for.
How do you find contentment and maintain it? The easiest way to express gratitude is to sit down and write out the things you’re grateful for. Contentment is something we could all use. By contentment, I feel secure with what I have, what I am, and where I am emotionally at this moment in time. I know things can change, but I am fine with my now. Here are five reminders from Nicole Franco I that will help you find the internal contentment you desperately need
1.
Simplify life Give up what you don't need and be glad you did. Material
things take space and energy to maintain. Toxic relationships tax
our positivism and peacefulness. Worry
and despair
over things we cannot change rob our sense of well being. Very few things in
life are a real crisis.
Those
that are cannot be solved by worry but by deliberate and thoughtful actions.
Take decisive action to cut out the things that complicate and thus rob you of
true contentment.
2.
Have fun Regret can be a mood killer. We often take the
serious and over-analyzed road when making decisions. It's good to be
responsible; it's also good to take a chance even if it entails a big mistake. Respect your
boundaries, but be open to experiences and challenges that offer a
sense of peace.
3.
Make room for quiet Whether
you pray, meditate, or listen to nature, allow yourself to hear
what's in your heart. Connecting with what is inside better prepares you to
deal with the exterior world with calmness and peace.
Give up
control and release yourself to thoughts and emotions that can heal,
strengthen, and surprise you. Your inner voice often has something to say. You
can best recognize that gut feeling that can act as a reliable compass once you
turn off all the noisy, messy distracting sounds of life. I describe it as
being “plugged in” to the positivity around me.
4.
Recognize enough With gentle reminders from those I respect, I have
accepted my real life is happening right
now. I celebrate accomplishments as they happen, and avoid looking
ahead too far. Going
slowly
and enjoying the journey is life.
Expectations
can lead to disappointment, but accepting what I have been given now is
contentment. If right now is painful for you, try thinking I’m growing instead
of I’m hurting. Sometimes the move forward s necessary. I repeat I have what I
need to remind me that now is a blessing.
5.
Show humility I am reminded everyday to be
grateful for things
such as a house I love, and the ability to share with my children. I feel
thankful to have what I have and a joy to take care of it. My chores are a
service to my family and a dose of humbleness for my soul.
“Contentment is a pearl of
great price, and whoever procures it at the expense of ten thousand desires
makes a wise and a happy purchase.” (John Balguy) [i]
