The Cup

He said, “Father, if it’s your will, take this cup of suffering away from me. However, not my will but your will must be done.” (Luke 22:42, CEB)[i] __________________________________________________

Stage Direction: The scene begins with a lonely church chair with a spotlight on it. In walks Claire to sit down. She is dressed nicely in church clothes. A turban covers her entire head (and all of her hair). Claire is supposed to be bald from chemotherapy.

Her face should look sickly (with the use of makeup).  As Claire does her monologue, she should be looking at the audience with a genuine smile. (Note: Claire could also be the man Clarence. The turban would be replaced by a form-fitting ski cap.)

Monologue/Stage Direction: “With cancer, I have my good days and some bad ones, too. There is one thing that I have always known since my illness began. (Claire lowers head, and places her hands in a praying position, and begins to pray.)

“Heavenly Father, it’s me, Claire, and this cancer has got me frightened. You know just how much I adore You, and want to see You one day.  I’d like to spend some more time with those I love here on Earth. I’ve had many cups of joy throughout my life. Could you take away these cups of sorrow from my family and friends? I don’t want them to have to drink them on my behalf in the near future.  Heavenly Father, when will you be ready for this cancer to finally bring me home to You in Heaven? I submit to Your will. I always want Your will to be done, and not my own.”

Claire looks up at the audience, smiles, wipes her eyes (or nose) with a hanky from her pocket, and exits the stage. The spotlight goes off Claire as she leaves the chair.
