My Mother Tongue

I've forgotten the number of times that I’ve made this comment to my wife. “It seems like nobody does as much for Father’s Day as they do for Mother’s Day. It’s kind of unfair and disappointing.”

This year my lovely bride gave me her honest opinion this statement. Here is my summary of Bobbi’s thoughts (as best as I can remember them with some creativity on my part).

“Mother’s Day should be more important than Father’s Day. Mothers are pregnant for nine months with the climax of birth, and the pain of delivery. We are the ones that set climate of the home.

Though some fathers do help quite a bit, we are the ones that cook, clean, and use our mother’s intuition to correctly understand the true intent of all our children’s hopes, dreams, and disappointments.

When our children are sick or scared, it’s mommy they want to hold them. Our opinion (and language) of who our children are deep inside will shape their future. They want our approval.”

I recently viewed a commercial for Johnson’s Baby Products. The theme was: “For Every Little Wonder.” The commercial was full of pregnant mothers.  Though the narrator was never seen, after his (or hers) speech it was certain that an unborn child was giving it.

I was so touched (as a father) by the short amount of words I heard that I rewound the commercial. I wrote it down to share with you (as I can only imagine how it will impact any mother). Whether you are a mom-to-be, have minor (teenage or adult) children, or are in the grandmother stage of life, I believe what you are about to read will touch you.

“You know, Mom, I will change you. Change your body, and what you call love. I’m going to make you think less about yourself, and more about those little things you never notice.

Sometimes, I will turn your night into day, and for sure I’ll mark you forever. But I promise, Mom, it will be the greatest journey of your life.”

No matter what your position in life is as a female, God wants your unique perspective and talents in building His kingdom. No matter the age, I will never cease to be emotionally dependent on the godly woman that gave me life (and my personality so similar to hers).

As my symbol of gratitude to my mom, Proverbs 23:22 (MSG) tells me exactly what I should do for her (right now). “…when your mother grows old, don’t neglect her.” May this special day fill each mother with many blessings from those that you dearly love. We will always need you. Happy Mother’s Day!
