Literacy at It’s Best

In my twenties, I was brimming with creative ideas. One involved three store (or window) clothing displays that promoted reading, clothing for three (of the four seasons), and raised money for volunteer organizations in central Ohio. At the time this idea was directed to Lazarus Department Store (now Macy’s). I can’t remember if I had any luck with presenting this idea to Lazarus, but here it is for your approval. Enjoy your reading adventures.
1.   Dorothy Gale of Kansas had many fantastic adventures in the mystical Land of Oz. Royal Oz Historian, L. Frank Baum, and other chosen authors wrote about the people and the lands of Oz. Look into one of the many Oz thrillers at your local library. Macy’s can supply you with the enchanting summer outfit Princess Dorothy is wearing as she strolls down the yellow-brick road to the Wizard.
2.   In Puritan times, Hester Prynne was setting sexual trends for generations of women to come. Nathaniel Hawthorne masterfully portrays the shame of secret love in The Scarlett Letter. The library is where you go to check out the book (or find the film and audio versions). The trendy Fall capped outfit is now at Macy’s.
3.   Scarlett O’Hara Hamilton Kennedy Butler was a shrewd business woman in her time period. She could have been a party animal on the weekends. The lovely practical outfit she is wearing today could have been used for a night out on the town. If you are not familiar with the romance of Scarlett and Rhett, it is portrayed in Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, Scarlett by Alexandria Ripley, and concludes with Rhett Butler’s People by Daniel McCaig. Find the books (and the movies) at your local library. Scarlett’s desirable winter fashion is all Macy’s.
