Let’s
be totally honest with each other. Do you ever feel superior over someone in
the workplace (or elsewhere) due to education, gender, physical capabilities,
race, age, body weight, sexual orientation, or religious belief? Before you explain
how superior to you pet, I would probably agree. Animals are on a whole other
plain of intelligence.
You
may not realize the subtle signs of prejudice when they creep into your
conversation with those of the opposite sex. Do your comments at times become a
little course and inappropriate in these particular situations? What about your
dealings with the mentally challenged mail man Darren (who you’ve always
thought of as a mail boy) in your office? Do you give him the respect he
deserves, or do you find yourself talking down to him.
On
the floor just below you is a woman that has to be at least 400 pounds. You
know the lady’s name is Sonya, and she works in your company’s fourth floor
accounting department. You wonder how it is possible for person to allow
themselves to get that heavy. You chalk it up to her being laziness and
stupidity.
The
Jewish guy (Levi) that sits across from you in the office doesn’t appear to
have many friends in the workplace. You have all sorts of opinions about them
as a group of people like they are all rich, and their forefathers murdered
Jesus. Do your conflicting religious beliefs as a Catholic keep you from
stretching yourself emotionally (outside your comfort zone) as another human being?
Wouldn’t it be great to validate if your opinions are accurate?
Anyone
who is different from you can enrich your life in ways that are unimaginable.
Remember, when the superiority monster starts to rear its ugly head anywhere in
your life. You have the choice to put yourself in those persons “shoes”
figuratively, or continue to act in a way you will regret later. Stand up for
the under dog because it is the correct thing to do.
