“Open your mind before you open your mouth.” (Subroto Bagchi)
Open-mindedness (your ability to remain
receptive to new ideas, perspectives, and solutions) is a crucial character
trait to have. Those who see an abundance of opportunities in the
world often experience benefits beyond the economic.
Open-mindedness is not an inborn trait, but a
learned one. Just as you learned to ride a bike or balance a budget, you can
learn to let go of preconceived notions and approach the world with a childlike
openness. Here are the characteristics of an open-minded person:
· Open-minded people are curious to hear
what others think.
· Open-minded people are able to have
their ideas challenged.
· Open-minded people don’t get angry when
they are wrong.
· Open-minded people have empathy for
other people.
· Open-minded people think about
what other people are thinking.
· Open-minded people are humble about
their own knowledge and expertise.
· Open-minded people want to hear what
other people have to say.
· Open-minded people believe others have a
right to share their beliefs and thoughts.
Being more open-minded means enjoying some
useful and powerful benefits. Open-mindedness helps you:
Being open to other ideas can also open you up to new experiences.
Challenging your existing beliefs and considering new ideas can give you
fresh insights about the world, and also teach you new things about yourself.
It’s hard to keep learning when you surround yourself with the same old
ideas. Pushing your boundaries and reaching out to people with different
perspectives and experiences can help keep your mind fresh.
Keeping an open mind can help you grow as a person. You learn new things
about the world, and the people around you.
One of the problems with staying closed-minded is that it often leads to
a greater sense of negativity. Being open-minded can help inspire a more
optimistic attitude toward life and the future.
Staying open to new ideas and experiences can help you become a
stronger, more vibrant person. Your experiences and knowledge continue to build
on one another.
“For things to
reveal themselves to us, we need to be ready to abandon our views about them.” (Thich Nhat Hahn)[i]
