It is not good for the man to be alone, so I will create a companion for him, a perfectly suited partner. (Genesis 2:18, the Voice) God said this to Adam before the creation of Eve.
To be perfectly honest, a good husband is
always willing to take help from his wife when it is needed. It is hard to try
to function alone, but consistently falling short of your goal. God knew Adam needed
a helper in doing the work He had assigned him to be successful. The wife’s
title as “helper is a high compliment and not a criticism. In Psalm 124:8, God Himself is referred to as
our Helper. A husband who has a wife willing to help Him fulfill God’s purpose
for His life has a treasure worth far more than the most rubies (Proverbs
3:15).
Marriage is one of God’s ways of showing a
married couple that life cannot be done alone. We both cannot fulfill God’s
purpose for our lives without each other’s help. That is why a single mother
(or a single father) struggles so desperately and courageously to be what their
children need of them.
It is impossible for one person to do the both
roles of mother and father without God’s help. God made it that way. He
intended for you to assist your spouse as a primary purpose in your marriage.
It even meets a desire in yourself to know that you are needed.
“If you ever need
a helping hand, it’s at the end of your arm. As you get older, you must remember
you have a second hand. The first one is to help [you]. The second hand is to help others.” (Audrey Hepburn)[i]
