“You never know how strong you are, until being strong is your only choice.” (Bob Marley)
As a parent (It
really doesn’t matter the age of your child) if they get a severe illness. You
want to make them healthy (illness free). It doesn’t matter if you have to
drive long distances to find the right doctor, or deplete all the money you
have in your savings account. As a man (and a father), you have desire to fight
this bad thing and win, but how can that be done when the enemy is something
you can’t see (with your eyes). You hope the care your child is getting will
defeat this illness. If that solution doesn’t work, what should be done then?
From a crowd of
people a nameless father steps out and humbly kneels before Jesus asking for
help for his nameless son. (Let’s call the father “Mr. Weary,” and the son “Uriel[i].”)
Today, I believe Uriel’s condition might be diagnosed as some kind of seizure
disorder (of course I am no doctor). Back in Jesus’ time, foaming at the mouth,
grinding your teeth, your body becoming rigid, the person almost being drowned
to death or burned up, and having episodes of violent behavior, the individual
was labeled as “demonically possessed.”
Chances are
Uriel had lots of scars from the burning episodes, and could have been scared
of water. Mr. Weary told Jesus that his
disciples had not been able to heal his son. Jesus chose work another miracle
for the Weary family. He was with his father that day when Jesus healed him
(in-person) of an illness that had plagued Uriel for many years. Mr. Weary’s belief
that nothing could help his son was restored by Jesus.
When your life
does not go as you feel it should, it’s easy to lose your faith in God. Smith
Wigglesworth had this to say: “There
is nothing impossible with God. All the impossibility is with us when we
measure God by the limitations of our unbelief.” Are you
willing to take what God is doing in your life, and see how He is always at
work (even when you think He isn’t)?[ii]
