Meaningful

Challenges are what make life interesting, and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.”(Joshua J. Marine)

"I have a problem." You hear versions of this phrase regularly. Many people have problems, but do they really? It all comes down to how you view problems and challenges. Words have the power to build or destroy. Words carry incredible meaning and emotion. Most people consider challenges and problems to be synonymous as both create a barrier for the individual to reach success in one’s daily life.

This is a fallacy. A challenge is greatly different from a problem. A challenge is a demanding task that an individual wishes to overcome. A problem is something difficult to deal with (or understand) that prevents the development of an individual. It is any question or matter involving doubt, uncertainty, or difficulty.

A problem lends to a mindset of limiting beliefs giving power to the obstacles in one’s life. It means opening up to excuses, and giving away ownership. This leads to a life of ineffectiveness.  A challenge at its core it is an empowering thing. A challenge is an opportunity for success and growth. It is not an easy thing, but by approaching an obstacle as a challenge (rather than a problem) power is attained to determine the outcome.

In order to overcome a challenging situation, the individual needs to put in a lot of effort. Although this can be very tiring, at the end the individual feels a positive sense of accomplishment as they were able to overcome the difficulties to find a solution. A problem can be viewed as something that hinders the achievement of a particular goal.

Most people approach problems with a negative attitude, which can affect their thoughts and behavior. The person that takes control of their life by choosing their thoughts and words is the person who is better prepared to accomplish all the many things they desire.

For the next two days, carefully select the words you use. Think before you speak, and make sure those words are as positive as you can make them. When you slip up and speak negatively, catch and correct yourself.  Acknowledge to yourself, and to those who were part of the conversation that you meant to say a more positive thing.

As you do this two day positive word challenge, I would ask you to pay attention to the way you feel about the responsibilities and obstacles of your day. I believe you will find them to be more manageable. I believe you will feel more hopeful land successful.

You can take control of most any situation and alter your perspective to see the positives and possibilities. I would guess that you’ll find reason to extend this beyond the two days I am asking for. How does this make a difference in your life? Are you up to the challenge?

“Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don’t fight them. Just find a new way to stand.” (Oprah Winfrey)[i]
