COVID-19 is short for COronaVIrus Disease 2019, and is a disease outbreak that began in China in 2019. COVID-19 can cause symptoms similar to flu like a new continuous cough, high temperature on your chest or back, and feeling short of breath.
For most people the symptoms are mild but some will develop severe breathing problems and other complications. The risk of severe symptoms is higher in people with weakened immune systems, older people and people with long-term conditions including long-term lung conditions. Symptoms may appear two to 14 days after exposure.
COVID-19 appears
to spread from person to person among those in close contact. It is spread by
respiratory droplets when someone infected with the virus coughs or sneezes.
It's unclear exactly how contagious the virus is. Wash your hands often with
soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you
cough or sneeze. Throw away the used tissue. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and
mouth if your hands aren't clean. Clean and disinfect surfaces you often touch
on a daily basis.
·
Self isolation- It applies to people who have
symptoms of Covid-19, and people who live with them. Self isolation is about
limiting face-to-face interactions with people. Self-isolation is the most
effective way of preventing the Covid-19 from spreading.
·
Social distancing-This is what anyone who is not
displaying any symptoms
must now be practicing. It means that you should not be in any
large gatherings or groups and maintain your distance from others. People can
only leave their house for shopping for necessities, once a day for exercise, medical
need or providing care, or travelling to or from work (if you can't work from
home). You should stay
more than 3 steps from others.
·
Social shielding- Social shielding is a way to
protect people who are extremely vulnerable from coming into contact with
Covid-19 by minimizing all interaction between them and other people.
""The price for independence is often isolation and solitude." (Steve Schmidt)i]
