Many of us have gone through stages where we felt a sense of emptiness and a lack of happiness in our life. It isn’t because our physical needs have not been met. There is a series of very basic physical needs that we all need like food, housing, and access to healthcare.
Many of us don’t understand what we are lacking to be happy, and therefore don’t know where to seek and find what we need. We all want to be happier, as well as be more productive. Remember, happiness is also the road and the destination. Below is a list of ways to be happy in all aspects of your life:
1. Happiness begins with acceptance- “Acceptance looks like a passive state, but
in reality it brings something entirely new into this world. That peace, a
subtle energy vibration, is consciousness.” (Eckhart Tolle)
2. Happiness is about being of
service-“We are but
visitors on this planet. We are here for ninety or one hundred years at the
very most. During that period, we must try to do something good, something
useful with our lives. If you contribute to other people’s happiness, you will
find the true goal, the true meaning of life.” (Dalai Lama)
3. Happiness is about being
present in the moment-“The present
moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see
it.” (Thích Nhất Hạnh)
4. Happiness is about letting go-“There is no ongoing
spiritual life without this process of letting go. At the precise point where
we refuse, growth stops. If we hold tightly to anything given to us, unwilling
to let it go when the time comes to let it go or unwilling to allow it to be
used as the Giver means it to be used, we stunt the growth of the soul. It is
easy to make a mistake here, “If God gave it to me,” we say, “its mine. I can
do what I want with it.” No. The truth is that it is ours to thank Him for and
ours to offer back to Him, ours to relinquish, ours to lose, ours to let go of
– if we want to find our true selves, if we want real life, if our hearts are
set on glory.” (Elisabeth Elliot)
5. Happiness is about living
every minute with love, grace, and gratitude- “We tend to
forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t
have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.”
(Frederick Keonig)
6. Happiness is about loving life- “Love life engage in it. Give it all you’ve
got. Love it with a passion because life truly does give back, many times over,
what you put into it.” (Maya Angelou)
7. Happiness is about loving yourself just as you are- “To love yourself right now, just as you
are, is to give yourself heaven. Don’t wait until you die. If you wait, you die
now. If you love, you live now.” (Alan Cohen)
8. The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your
thoughts- “The happiness
of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard
accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue
and reasonable nature.”(Marcus Aurelius)
9. There is no way to
happiness. Happiness is the way-“There is no way to
happiness. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment you have. And
treasure it more because you shared it with someone special. And remember that
time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go
back to school, until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds, until you
have kids, until your kids leave the house, until you start work, until you
retire, until you get married, until you get divorced, until Friday night,
until Saturday morning, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home
is paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you
are off welfare, until the first or fifteenth, until your song comes on, until
you’ve had a drink, until you’ve sobered up, until you die, until you are born
again, to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy.” (Anonymous)
10. Your happiness depends on
you-“Don’t rely
on someone else for your happiness and self-worth. Only you can be responsible
for that. If you can’t love and respect yourself – no one else will be able to
make that happen. Accept who you are – completely; the good and the bad – and
make changes as you see fit – not because you think someone else wants you to
be different.” (Stacey
Charter)
“Real happiness is cheap enough, yet how
dearly we pay for its counterfeit. “ (Hosea
Ballou)[i]
