Trustworthy

“Luke is a historian of the first rank: not merely are his statements of fact trustworthy…the author should be placed along with the very greatest of historians.” (Sir William Ramsay)

“Many have undertaken to compile a narrative about the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as the original eyewitnesses and servants of the word handed them down to us. It also seemed good to me, since I have carefully investigated everything from the very first, to write to you in an orderly sequence, most honorable Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things about which you have been instructed.” (Luke 1:1-4)

How do we know for certain that the New Testament is true?

1.      The variety and consistency of the New Testament accounts

All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17), see Luke 1:1 above

2.     The validity of the eyewitness testimony

For we did not follow cleverly contrived myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; instead, we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.” (2 Peter 1:16), see Luke 1:2 above

3.   The accuracy of the history

“The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God remains forever.” (Isaiah 40:8), see Luke 1:3 above

“It may be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a Biblical reference. Scores of archaeological findings have been made which confirm in clear outline or exact detail historical statements in the Bible. And, by the same token, proper evaluation of Biblical descriptions has often led to amazing discoveries.” (Nelson Glueck)[i]
