In today’s world, a blessing is anything that is an encouragement to one’s day. On the reverse of this, have you ever thought about writing down things you were thankful for throughout your day right before you go to sleep each night? Counting your blessings can be a worthwhile and lifetime project. It is amazing how many things we can begin to take for granted unless we purposely remember how fortunate we are with all we have.
By
looking for ten different blessings each day, you can go beyond the normal stuff,
and be pleasantly surprised by all the things in your life that would not want
to do without (like the aroma of your
favorite candle, or hot and cold running water). We all need to be more
thankful for all our Heavenly Father has blessed us with. Does Rend Collective’s
song, “Counting
Every Blessing” express the message you
wish to offer up to God?
[Verse 1]
I was blind, now I'm seeing in color
I was dead, now I'm living forever
I had failed, but You were my Redeemer
I've been blessed beyond all measure
[Verse 2]
I was lost, now I'm found by the Father
I've been changed from a ruin to treasure
I've been given a hope and a future
I've been blessed beyond all measure
[Chorus]
I am counting every blessing, counting
every blessing
Letting go and trusting when I cannot see
I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Surely every season You are good to me
[Verse 3]
You were there in the valley of shadows
You were there in the depth of my sorrows
You're my strength, my hope for tomorrow
I've been blessed beyond all measure
[Chorus]
There are seasons of our lives
when blessings seem to be absent. We all
long to experience blessings in our lives. A Blessings Jar is another way to be
mindful of all God is doing for you in your life throughout the year. Deliberately make note
of blessings as they happen. Below is how to start your very own Blessings Jar.
·
Get a large jar or container. Preferably the
jar is clear so you can see it fill up throughout the year.
·
Place your blessing jar in a visible location
and keep it there all year long.
·
Place a pen and a stack of 3×5 cards or paper
pad next to the jar. Also consider carrying some in your brief case, book bag,
purse, etc.
·
As soon as possible after you experience a
blessing, write it down. As soon as you are near your blessing jar, place the
paper into the jar. Each blessing is written on its own card or piece of paper.
·
On December 31st, set aside an hour or so to
read through each blessing. Take time to thank God for each one of the
blessings in the jar
·
Bonus tip: On
discouraging days throughout the year, read a few of your blessings and be
encouraged. Be sure to put the blessings back in the jar for the end of the
year.
·
For the tech savvy : You
can digitize your blessing jar. Email could be used. Email each blessing to yourself.
There is something encouraging to visually see a physical jar fill up
throughout the year. Even if you use a tech tool to capture your blessings,
print them out so you can put them into a physical blessing jar.

“The struggle of life is one of our greatest blessings. It makes us patient, sensitive, and Godlike. It teaches us that although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” (Helen Keller)[i]
