Living Proof

“Older generations are living proof that younger generations can survive their lunacy.” (Cullen Hightower)

In America, there are six living generations, which are six distinct groups of people. Each generation has different attributes. They have had collective experiences as they aged and therefore have similar ideals. A person’s birth date may not always be indicative of their generational characteristics, but as a common group they have similarities. Understanding generational traits can help you to understand how to communicate with a variety of individuals. Where do you fit in?

Government Issue (G. I.) Generation  (born 1901 to 1926) This generation experienced much of their youth during rapid technological innovation (radio, telephone). After the Stock Market crashed, this generation experienced profound economic and social turmoil, which eventually culminated in World War II.

Silent/Mature Generation  (born 1927 to 1945) While there were many civil rights leaders, the "Silent’s" are called that because many focused on their careers rather than on activism, and people in it were largely encouraged to conform with social norms. As young adults during the McCarthy Era, many members of the Silent Generation felt it was dangerous to speak out.

They were born during the Great Depression and World War II, they moved into adulthood during the relatively prosperous 1950s and early 1960s. For men who served in the Korean War, their military service was not marked by high casualties as much as the previous generation..

Baby Boomer Generation (born 1946 to 1964)) Baby boomers are associated with a rejection of traditional values. As a group, baby boomers were the wealthiest, most active, and most physically fit generation up to the era in which they arrived, and were amongst the first to grow up genuinely expecting the world to improve with time.

They were also the generation that received peak levels of income; they could therefore reap the benefits of abundant levels of food, apparel, retirement programs, and sometimes even "midlife crisis" products. One feature of the boomers was that they have tended to think of themselves as a special generation very different from those that had come before or that has come afterward.

Generation X (born 1965 to1980) Members of Generation X were children during a time of shifting societal values and as children were sometimes called the "latchkey generation," due to reduced adult supervision as children compared to previous generations.

There was increasing divorce rates and increased maternal participation in the workforce with widespread availability of childcare options outside the home. As adolescents and young adults, they were dubbed the "MTV Generation" (a reference to the music video channel of the same name). The “x” in Generation X refers to an unknown variable, or to a desire not to be defined.

Generation Y/Millennium Generation (born 1981 to 2000) Although Millennial characteristics vary by region depending on social and economic conditions, the generation is generally marked by an increased use and familiarity with communications, media, and digital technologies. In most parts of the world, their upbringing was marked by an increase in a liberal approach to politics and economics.

The Great Recession has had a major impact on this generation because it has caused historically high levels of unemployment among young people, and has led to speculation about possible long-term economic and social damage to this generation.

Generation Z/Boomlets (born after 2001)  Most of Generation Z has used the Internet since a young age, and they are generally comfortable with technology and with interacting on social media. This generation was shaped by change and uncertainty. Fallout of the 9/11/01 attack in New York Twin Towers was fewer people feel safe at home. In March 2018, survivors of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, themselves members of Generation Z, started to refer to themselves as the mass shooting generation.

“It's not so weird that four generations are living together under the same roof and trying to make it work. It's how a lot of people in this country are living right now. “(Martha
