A person’s true family can form in
many different ways (either biologically or through various circumstances). On a date night on Friday, July 28 at 7pm, my wife (Bobbi) and I saw a perfect example of this in
the Guts for Glory Theater Company’s wonderful production of Tarzan: the Musical at the Shedd Theater
in the Columbus Performing Arts Center in Columbus, OH.
This is the
journey of an orphan boy (Tarzan) off of the West African coast, who struggles to find an unexpected family among
the gorillas. Eventually,Tarzan finds himself in love with a young English biologist named Jane Porter. If you wish to be a better friend to those you consider your true family, here are some helpful hints:
1. With a
long-distance friendship, communicate as though no time has passed.
2. Be
yourself around others. (Don’t try to impress them.)
3. Communicate
acceptance (for each other) early in the relationship.
4. Do not
judge others because no one’s perfect.
5. Express
gratitude when someone blesses you unexpectedly.
6.
Friendship
is a two-way street (when it comes to venting).
7. Let go
of unrealistic expectations with other people.
8. Show true
empathy to others (when it is needed most).
9. Take
responsibility for who you are.
10. We all
need each other.
“On this journey that you’re making, there’ll be answers that you’ll seek…It’s you who’ll climb the mountain. It’s you who’ll reach the peak.”
