Shepherd of the Flock

“He handed out gifts of…pastor-teacher to train Christ’s followers …within the church…” (Ephesians 4:11-12, MSG) “Lord, I have not abandoned my job as a shepherd for your people…” (Jeremiah 17:16, NLT)

If you have made a habit of weekly church attendance (try it), have you ever thought of praying for the person behind the pulpit (or podium)? It makes little difference if your faith calls that individual a minister, priest, rabbi, or something else. (It never hurts to pray for someone.) Below are some specific ways you can lift that person up in prayer to the Almighty:

Pray for…
1.   A strong, consistent prayer life, knowledge of the Bible, and walk with God.
2.   Acceptance of them (and their family) and all the ministries of your church. (Romans 15:31)
3.   Boldness, clarity, and courage in presenting gospel.
4.   Deliverance from Satan (and strength to fight him). (Ephesians 6:19)
5.   Extension of the church’s ministries (beyond its current boundaries), and abundance in all that is being done in Christ’s name. (II Thessalonians 3:1-3)
6.   Harmony, understanding, and good communication between the pastor and the church.
7.   Purity and fidelity within the pastor’s marriage. Give them open communication with their spouse and children (if applicable).
8.   Good physical (and emotional) health.
9.   Excellent decision making skills for their family and the church.
10.                     Congregation members to squelch gossip about the pastor’s family, and instead encourage him (her).

Imagine what could happen in churches all over the world if the congregations of those houses of worship soaked the ministers in daily prayer? Pastors are often the bull’s eye for harsh words (and condemnation). What would happen instead if they became the subject of passionate communication to God?

In connection with this post, remember James 5:16. “The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with.” When you don’t know what to do in any life situation for yourself (or someone else), prayer to your Heavenly Father is always an option that can make a profound difference.
