Our bodies are made up of around sixty percent water, the most important nutrient you consume each day. Daily we lose water from our bodies through perspiration, urination, and bowel movements. It’s vital to overall health to replace this lost water to avoid health consequences.
Depending on your gender, weight and activity levels, the amount of water you need to replenish may differ. Men should drink about 13 cups (3 liters) of water/beverages a day and women need about 9 cups (2.2 liters) a day. Heavier people and people who exercise a lot both need more than the average amount of water.
We
all know that you can get water from a bottle, a sink, or a garden hose whenever
that’s possible. Did you know that cucumbers, lettuce, celery, watermelon, strawberries,
grapefruit, cantaloupe, and peaches are great sources of water? Here are amazing things you might not be aware water can do for you:
1. Water aids digestion-As your body digests food, water is needed to carry nutrients and
minerals to the parts of the body that need them. In the case of foods
like soluble fiber, you need water to digest them at all. Properly digested
food is more nutritious for you and makes for easier bowel movements.
2.
Water
alleviates muscle cramping-Have you experienced muscle cramping after an intense
workout? Lack of electrolytes like potassium or magnesium might be the cause,
but it could also be dehydration. Try upping your water intake and see how your
body feels afterward. You can also try adding electrolyte powder to your water
or drinking natural coconut water, which is high in electrolytes.
3.
Water flushes toxins from organs-Nearly all major
systems in your body need water, and your vital organs are no different.
Drinking substantial amounts of water will flush the bad stuff out of your body
especially from your kidneys, and give them the nutrients and oxygen they need
to work.
4.
Water helps fight allergies-The tissues of the
ears, nose, and throat are one of the first lines of defense against allergens.
Those environments need water to stay moist and to capture (and release)
irritants and other foreign objects.
5.
Water helps
with losing weight faster-When your muscles are properly hydrated, you can walk, run,
strength-train longer and harder giving you a more effective workout. In
addition, water can increase your metabolic rate (the rate at which you burn
calories) even while at rest.
6.
Water keeps skin healthy-The outermost layer
of your skin, the epidermis, needs water in order to remain healthy and to give
it elasticity. Dehydrated skin will have a rougher texture than skin that has
enough moisture.
7.
Water lessens
sugar cravings-This
could be another secret to weight loss. When our bodies are dehydrated we tend
to crave sweets even more. Whenever you feel an intense sugar-craving coming
on, drink a big glass of water first and wait five minutes. If it subsides, you
may have just been dehydrated.
8.
Water makes you
happier-If
you find yourself moody, depressed, foggy or grouchy; a big glass of water may
be all you need.
9.
Water protects your joints-Without water, the
areas around joints and even your spinal cord does not have enough moisture and
can erode due to friction. Water will lubricate and protect these areas and
keep you moving.
10.
Water relieves
headaches-If
you chug diuretics like coffee, soda or tea in a large amount, your body may
excrete more water than it should. Cut back on your diuretics intake and
replace them with water. Many people struggling with severe headaches and
migraines experienced relief almost immediately after their diet-soda habit
ended.
“Water remains the best choice for hydration. Low-fat
milk will also give you a great protein source, or you can mix seltzer water
with juice. As some juices are high in calories and sugars, try to drink in
moderation or mix half water and half juice for a water juice combination. Soda
and iced tea should be drunk in moderation because they usually come with lots
of sugar and caffeine.” (Julie Raeder Schumacher)[i]
