The title of this post is
also the name of a song by the Christian musical group, Casting Crowns. The thought-provoking lyrics provide food for
thought regarding why the Almighty chooses to use lowly humans like us. (Here
is my abridged version.) We often question what our moral fiber is made of for
the task our Heavenly Father has laid before us.[i]
Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt
Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart
Still You hear me when I'm calling
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling
And You've told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours
Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love…
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt
Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart
Still You hear me when I'm calling
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling
And You've told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours
Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love…
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me
Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are…
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are…
If
you are currently struggling with this, you are in good company, ordinary
people (in extraordinary circumstances) like Abraham, Moses, Gideon, Jeremiah,
Saul, David, Solomon, and Mary (the mother of Jesus) from the Bible desperately wanted the “who am I” question
answered for themselves by the Almighty. (Make sure to check out this first endnote
for more information on the above topic as viewed in scripture.) [ii]
Transformation is a process (and as life happens) there are tons of ups
and downs. It's a journey of discovery. There are moments on mountaintops and
moments in deep valleys of despair. (Rick Warren)
‘Use
me, God. Show me how to take who I am, who I want to be, and what I can do, and
use it for a purpose greater than myself’.” (Martin Luther King Jr.)[iv]

[ii] But Gideon replied, “Sir, how
can I save Israel? My family is the poorest in the whole tribe of
Manasseh, and I am the least thought of in the entire family.” Judges 6:15 (TLB)
But Moses pleaded, “O Lord,
I’m just not a good speaker. I never have been, and I’m not now, even after you
have spoken to me, for I have a speech impediment.” Exodus 4:10 (TLB)
“Pardon me, sir,” Saul replied. “I’m from the tribe of Benjamin,
the smallest in Israel, and my family is the least important of all the
families of the tribe! You must have the wrong man.” 1
Samuel 9:21 (TLB)
Then David went into the
Tabernacle and sat before the Lord and prayed, “O Lord God, why have you
showered your blessings on such an insignificant person as I am? 2 Samuel 7:18 (TLB)
“O Lord God,” I said, “I can’t do that! I’m far too young! I’m only a youth!” Jeremiah 1:6 (TLB) Jeremiah
Gideon said to God, “If this is right, if you are using me to save Israel as you’ve said, then look: I’m placing a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If dew is on the fleece only, but the floor is dry, then I know that you will use me to save Israel, as you said.” Judges 6:36-37 (MSG)
I will bless you with incredible blessings and multiply your descendants into countless thousands and millions, like the stars above you in the sky, and like the sands along the seashore. They will conquer their enemies. Genesis 22:17 (TLB) Abraham
Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. Mary asked the angel, “But how can I have a baby? I am a virgin.” Luke 1:29, 34 (TLB) Mother of Jesus
[iii] Jesus is referring to Psalm 78:2 (GNT): “I am
going to use wise sayings, and
explain mysteries from the past.”
