Sends Shivers Down My Spine

In a commercial for the Blue Cash Everyday American Express Card, comedienne/actress/author Tina Fey is seated in an airplane cabin speaking (and laughing) with a male flight attendant (or air host).

They are looking at a tablet, laughing and discussing the merits of the exhausting process of a raisin-to-grape   rehydrator (as well as the scariness and painfulness of a life-size dragon head back scratcher). When a one-use microphone comes up, Tina makes this comical (but true) assessment to the flight attendant of its ultimate usefulness:  “Find your voice, and then dispose of it.”[i]

In my life, how many times have I kept silent when I should have spoken out? Chances are I didn’t make my voice known because I was fearful of offending the recipient. (Of course, there are those times that my words are hurtful, and should not come out of my mouth.)

The Bible has some wise advice about dealing with fear:

1.   “The Lord is my light and my salvation; he protects me from danger—whom shall I fear?”[ii] God is my ultimate Protector

2.  “Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed. I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”[iii] The Almighty will get me through my challenges (one way or the other). That’s a promise I can bank on.

3.  “God doesn’t want us to be shy with His gifts, but bold and loving and sensible.”[iv] How many times I’ve dulled my God-given personality just to fit in.

4.   “God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way love has the run of the house, becomes at home and mature in us…

There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life—fear of death, fear of judgment—is one not yet fully formed in love.”[v]Love should rule my life, but often fear and anger are in control (which produces disastrous results).

Below is great advice from well-known people I should pay attention to about not giving in to fear:

1.      “I truly believe that everything that we do and everyone that we meet is put in our path for a purpose. There are no accidents; we're all teachers - if we're willing to pay attention to the lessons we learn, trust our positive instincts and not be afraid to take risks or wait for some miracle to come knocking at our door.”  [vi]

2.     “The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be.” [vii]

3.     “Each day holds a surprise. But only if we expect it can we see, hear, or feel it when it comes to us. Let's not be afraid to receive each day's surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow or as joy It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared humanity.”  [viii]

4.    “If you're afraid to fail, then you're probably going to fail…The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do.” [ix]

The poem below resonates in the deepest part of the real me. Though I’m not always sure the poem’s conclusion holds true for me, I want it to be so for myself and all those I care about (which includes all of you in blog land). How can this piece make a connection with you?

We always wonder about the unknown
We think about it constantly
Asking ourselves if we are ready
Ready to face the unknown
That could spell our destiny

We always have this fear
Fear of the unknown and so it seems
But life is full of surprises
We just don’t know what will happen next

Sometimes we think we know
Or we think we’re sure
But we can never know or be sure
Because life is unpredictable
And that’s what makes it worth living[x]
