Has anything
ever happened to you that seemed so bizarre that you wondered if you were
losing your mind? From 1959-1964,
CBS aired five seasons (156 episodes) of the show, The Twilight Zone (with Host Rod Serling), the above premise was
used to create short stories of fantasy, suspense, or science fiction. The
twist ending turned out to be both unbelievable and unexpected. [i]
Each season began with a variation of the
following introduction by Narrator Rod Serling in his deep, mystical voice as
well as the beginning and closing comments in each episode, which sometimes featured
Rod’s physical presence. (I have combined all season introductions together in
my own unique version below.)
“You are about to enter
a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is as vast as space and as
timeless as infinity. You are
moving into the middle ground between sight
and sound, light and shadow, science and superstition,
mind and substance, and of things and ideas.
It lies between the pit
of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. It is a journey into a
wondrous land where the boundaries are the door of imagination (that only you
can unlock). There’s a sign post up ahead. You’ve just crossed over into your
next stop, the Twilight Zone.”
I’ve started viewing the original The Twilight Zone series on Hulu. (I’m
at season two.) It began the year before my parents were married, and concluded
the year I turned one.
I’ve noticed during this time period in
history their seemed to be no dressing casually. Women wore dresses and men in suits
(with few clothing exceptions for both genders). The episodes were somewhat
like my posts in that the viewer never had an idea what they were in for.
Smoking seemed to be a natural event that happened
for everyone - anywhere (even inside a hospital by doctors and nurses). I’m
noticing many younger actors (actresses) in The
Twilight Zone that later became well-known
in their own TV shows (and movies). So far the series rarely deals with the
topic of religion.[ii]
The Twilight Zone’s creator, Rod
Serling, did have his own opinions about the Almighty. Here are a few of them:
1. 1.
“According
to the Bible, God created the heavens and the Earth. It is [men
and women’s] prerogative to create their own…private
hell.”
While your Heavenly
Father has the ability to be understood by those that earnestly seek Him, His
ways can often be beyond human comprehension (just like a peculiar episode of The Twilight Zone). We are often
clueless as to how God will handle a situation in our life. The scripture has this to say about Him:
1. “Take a long hard look. See how great He is –
infinite, greater than anything you could imagine or figure out.”[iii]
2.
“The very steps
we take come from God; otherwise how would we know where were going?”[iv]
3. “For who knows a person’s thoughts except [for] their own spirit within them; in the same way, no
one knows the thoughts of God except the spirit of God.”[v]
When we clearly understand the indescribable
nature of the Almighty, and what He needs from us; one thing is for certain.
Roman 12:9-10 (NLT) tells us exactly what is required for us to break through
the darkness (of this world).
We all need to arrive safely at the dawn (of God’s
perfect will for our lives). This action guarantees an existence that honors the
Heavenly Father, and is true to both you (and your fellow man):
“Don’t
pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tight to
what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and delight in honoring
each other.”

Season 2 Episode 5 called “The Howling Man” made this profound religious quote:
“I saw him, and didn’t recognize him…That’s man’s weakness, and Satan’s
strength.”
