Eyeful (or Eyesore)i

If you have your sight (no matter how poor it might be), have you thanked the Almighty for it? What are all the wonderful things you can achieve because of the gift of vision?

Some of the positive attributes include the freedom of driving a car; keeping connected through Facebook; composing a blog for others to further contemplate life issues; enjoying a good movie, shopping trip or a beautiful sunset; engaging in life events like weddings or birthdays; reading (a good book in whatever form that happens); or pursuing higher education.

With everything good, there is often a reverse evil side. The same is true with your sight. Your eyes can view negative matter like internet pornography, the devastation of natural (or man-made) disasters, funerals, expressions in people’s faces that communicate displeasure or disapproval (towards others), blindness, or vision correction (through eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery).[i]

As you might expect, the Bible always gets to “the heart of the matter” on any subject. The topic of eyes (vision or sight) is not excluded. Below are two verses that will provide you with greater insight on the main point of this post.

“The only source of light for the body is the eye. If you look at people and want to help them, you will be full of light.  But if you look at people in a selfish way, you will be full of darkness. And if the only light you have is really darkness, you have the worst kind of darkness.”                (Matthew 6:22-23, ERV)

“I will try to walk a blameless path, but how I need your help, especially in my own home, where I long to act as I should. Help me to refuse the low and vulgar things; help me to abhor all crooked deals of every kind, to have no part in them.  I will reject all selfishness and stay away from every evil.” (Psalm 101:2-4, TLB)

One of the best Christian songs on spiritual eyesight is by artist, Brandon Heath. Read the chorus below, and come to terms with the message you are receiving.

Are you viewing people as the Almighty’s does? Though you are the “apple of God’s eye”[ii] to the Heavenly Father, are you doing enough (for those around you) that His Son died to save? Only you (and the Almighty) know the answer to that question.

Give me Your eyes for just one second
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me Your love for humanity
Give me Your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me Your eyes so I can see

Make note of this.[iii]

[i] A sight that is pleasing to the eyes, or something offensive to view.

[ii]This phrase refers to cherishing someone (or something) above anything else. This expression is used in verses like Deuteronomy 32:10, Psalm 17:8, Proverbs 7:2, and Zechariah 2:8.
It is also refers to the most sensitive part of the eye, the pupil. One can tolerate an eyelash on the white of the eye, but if it touches the pupil everything else is of less significance.

[iii] The subject for this post topic was taken from a verse card on the wall of my daughter’s bedroom in Gahanna, OH.
