“In
the Ten Commandments, it clearly states that we are not to worship anyone (or
anything) other than the one true God. In today’s fast-paced (electronic)
society, do people worship stuff other than God?”(Exodus 20:3-5, 23:25, Matthew
4:10)*
An
idol is defined as”an image that is adored as an object of worship.” A few
things to consider that the above meaning might include would be Facebook (the Internet), education, TV (ouch), car (upkeep),
blogging (double ouch), food, a job (even the ministry), iPhone, pets, a
person’s religious beliefs (and all its social groups), family or friends
(spouse or children), shopping, traveling, or a home (and all the items that go
into that). The list could go on indefinitely. You get the picture.
God
has the very human emotions of anger and jealousy. He refuses to share the
allegiance that is respectfully due Him with someone (or something) else
(Deuteronomy 6:15). Yet He persistently pursues those He loves (everyone) to
come to Him of their own free will (Romans 10:9-10, 13), and to make Him their first love.
He will accept no less from His children
(Psalms 81:9, Luke 4:8). Remember, we all make time in our lives for whatever
we consider imperative. Is God one of your priorities? Should He be? Where is
He on your importance list (first, last, or somewhere in the middle)?
In
the dictionary, worship is identified as “love or allegiance given to a deity,
idol, or sacred object.” Does this in anyway involve you?
I
do my best to refrain from using guilt trips. In my mind, it’s an unethical way
to force someone to submit to one’s will. (Some mothers are notorious for
this.)It’s always best and longer lasting if choice is made voluntarily. As
your friend, this is what I ask of you. Take a minute to listen to God’s quiet
voice (in your heart) that may be speaking to you right now. Do what it is
asking of you right now. The Almighty will never lead you astray.
